I’m a big fan of crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter but there’s another I just stumbled upon called RocketHub that seems to focus a bit more on science projects. One such is the Roman DNA project. It attempts to study the DNA of the remains of Imperial Rome’s poor to identify where they came from.
Isotope analysis showed me that one-third of the people were immigrants to Rome, but it couldn’t tell me where people were from. Neither could archaeological evidence, since these people were of the lowest social class (many were likely slaves) and were not buried with grave goods. For this project, I will do ancient DNA analysis on as many of the immigrants as possible to learn more about their geographical origins and heritage.
The cameras show that the delicate bird shakes its head with such acceleration that it can reach a g-force of 34 (Formula 1 racing cars typically reach less than 6g).

Carl from Got Medieval has a moving post about his difficulties in writing his dissertation. I don’t know Carl but his his blog is pretty great. I may not be writing a dissertation but can totally relate with many of the problems he’s facing.
